Divorce Reading List

Over the course of the last few years, I have read a number of books on divorce, a couple of which I have also contributed to. The following are a few that I think might be helpful.

Your Divorce Handbook: It’s What You Do Next That Counts As far as we know, this book is one of a kind, having been written by 6 divorce professionals, each writing 2 chapters about their own area of expertise. Susan Leigh writes as a counsellor and hypnotherapist about the emotional side of divorce, her chapters book ending the handbook. Marcia Lister is a mediator and discusses how this area can help to resolve areas of disagreement without going down a legal route. Family solicitors Carole Nettleton and Katie McCann discuss the legal aspects of divorce. Daniel Bell writes about housing and mortgages in divorce. Finally, my chapters concentrate on the financial separation of assets in divorce and planning your future life. We believe this is a go to handbook for those thinking about of going through divorce.

Separating with Children 101: The third edition of this guide to divorcing with children answers all your questions. Numerous divorce professionals have contributed to it, including some very well-known names in the field. I doubt there is a stone left unturned! If you have a question, there is bound to be an answer in this guide. Edited by Only Mums Only Dads’ Rebecca Giraud and Bob Grieg, who have also edited Jo O’Sullivan’s book (Almost) Anything but Family Court, which guides those wishing to avoid the enormous backlogs in the family courts at the moment and settle things amicably.

Divorcing a Narcissist: The Lure, The Loss and The Law Written by former GP and leading expert in Narcissism, Dr Supriya McKenna, and family lawyer, Karin Walker, this book is widely considered to be the leading guide on divorcing someone displaying the behaviours of someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. If you think this is you, you definitely need to read this book, so that you know what you may go through during the course of your divorce. For divorce professionals, there is also a guide to spotting it in clients and supporting clients divorcing someone with it.

Break Up: From Crisis to Confidence: Divorce Coach Claire Macklin’s book is an excellent and practical guide to handling the emotional upheaval of divorce. Whilst the narrative is brilliant, the exercises set during the book, help you to move through your divorce in the best possible emotional state, which will of course help you to make better decisions.

Split Survival Kit: A guide specifically written for children in the latter years of primary school whose parents are going through divorce or separation. These are difficult years in children’s lives but to handle your parents’ divorce as well can be tricky. Dr Angharad Rudkin and Ruth Fitzgerald’s book lets them know they’re not alone, guiding them through what they are feeling and how to deal with it. For younger children, there is The Divorce Journal for Kids by Sue Atkins.
