Sue Brookes

What can I do for you?

I am a family lawyermediator and collaborative lawyer with a wide range of experience. I can help you to sort matters out in whatever way will be best for you and your family, whether than is by mediation, the collaborative process, solicitor negotiation, or representing you in arbitration or the court.

I advise those who are married on the issues arising on relationship breakdown and divorce. I am specialised in helping those with more complex finances, including businesses, trusts and pensions on divorce.

I increasingly represent unmarried clients who are cohabiting and whose relationships have broken down.

I also regularly help clients who want to protect their assets either at the start of or during their relationships. This can be by way of pre or post-nuptial agreements or by way of cohabitation agreements for unmarried couples.

My clients include successful professionals and their partners. I act for people who are based all over the country and around the world, with many of my cases having an international element.

Supporting my clients’ aims and objectives

I always take care to ensure that I offer the best possible client service. You can expect me to listen to you and to deal with your matter professionally, while remaining sensitive to your particular needs. My aim is always to resolve cases as amicably and cost effectively as possible. I am focused on achieving what is best for my clients and their children within the circumstances of their particular case.

What do others say?

I am personally recommended in Chambers 2018, in which I am acknowledged for my “extensive knowledge, approachability, understanding and professional and personal concern over difficult decisions”.

Some of the feedback I’ve received from clients includes the following:

“Sue was fantastic throughout the process. She made a difficult subject quite straightforward with her professionalism and advice. Her ability to turn around documents extremely quickly while making me always feel well informed and advised was very impressive.”

“Thank you for the support which you have given to me. You have helped me through this and I very much appreciated your hard work.”

“Sue kept me on the straight and narrow, listening to me but most importantly giving me advice – even if it wasn’t the message I wanted to hear. She was always on my side, professional and concise. I knew that Mills and Reeve were unlikely to be the cheapest solicitors – but I knew I wanted to pay for the best advice – and this is what I got. I am very happy with the legal advice Sue provided.”

“I really enjoyed working with Sue. She struck a really nice balance between being highly professional, showing empathy and being very practical and outcomes focused throughout.”

“I was willing to pay the premium cost for the service on the basis that I would be working with an experienced lawyer who would pick up on issues quickly, offer measured and pragmatic suggestions and who would appreciate some of the complexities and nuances of my personal financial situation. I also instructed the firm because I wanted to be able to access the depth of expertise in areas related to (but not necessarily within) the family law practice area. There is no doubt that Mills & Reeve delivered extremely well on all these fronts.”

What else should you know?

I am a member of Resolution, the leading family law association.  I am a committee member of the Manchester Association of Women Solicitors and the Manchester Family DR Group (formerly Collaborative Law Manchester). I contribute to www.divorce.co.uk, an invaluable resource run by our team for those seeking information on divorce and separation.
